Call to Action: Lompoc Forum Highlights Threats to Senior Social Safety Net

Lompoc, CA —Lompoc Indivisible invites the community to a timely and urgent forum focused on protecting the senior social safety net from proposed cuts in the federal budget. The event will educate attendees on what’s at stake for Social Security, Medicaid, and nutrition programs—and how to take action to defend them.

WHEN: Saturday, May 31, 2025
TIME: 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
WHERE: Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center, 1120 W. Ocean Ave., Lompoc

The forum will be led by legendary entertainer Jon “Bowzer” Bauman, best known for his powerful bass voice in the nostalgic musical group Sha Na Na.  Jon, the current President of Social Security Works PAC, has become a leading voice in the national movement to protect and expand benefits for older Americans.  It would be disappointing to be in the same room with Jon and not hear him sing, too, so get ready for a musical and cultural flashback—he’ll share his music, live!

“During this unprecedented time of uncertainty related to potential cuts in the federal budget to senior services and benefits, every senior needs to be informed and ready to take action,” said John McReynolds, 81, a member of Lompoc Indivisible and Valley of the Flowers United Church of Christ, whose idea it was to create this event.

Local service organizations will also be on hand to share resources available to seniors in the Lompoc Valley. Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for the Lompoc Food Pantry as America’s food safety net is also facing steep cuts, and a decrease in American-grown food allocations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to Tracy Van Wie, organizer with Lompoc Indivisible, “This forum is about empowerment.” The Trump administration’s proposed budget includes drastic cuts to programs our seniors have earned. This is an opportunity to learn what’s really in the budget—and what you can do to stop it.”
